Dog Breeding: How To Lend A Helping Hand When Your Dogs Won't Breed
There are females who, although they may be sweet pets, actively resist being bred. It may be wise to muzzle females with either tape, gauze, an old stocking or a velcro muzzle before a breeding is attempted. Muzzling prevents a female from nipping or biting either the handler or the dog's face as he mounts and penetrates.
A growling female or one that overtly displays fear can leave a male reluctant to mount. Having someone hold the female's head by each cheek may sufficiently bolster the male's confidence to attempt the breeding.
Your female may respond confidently to a steadying hand on her stifle if she sags under the male. She can also be supported (depending upon her size and breed) by a dish, bath or beach towel slung under her belly. Stretched between two people immediately in front of her rear quarters or just behind her forelegs, the towel prevents her from sagging. She may require a second steadying hand at her head.
It may take three or even four people working together to get a breeding when handling very large and heavy dogs. One person holds the female's head, two stretch a towel slung under her and the fourth physically assists the male to mount, aim or remain penetrated until a tie can occur.
When mounting, a male normally grabs and holds the female by her rear quarters, his forelegs wrapped around her "waist." Balancing on his hind legs, the male pulls the female into him. Although he is not usually too high, he may appear so, as his head and shoulders ride up along her neck.
An unassertive stud may feel inhibited and reluctant to mount when those assisting are too close to the female. Use of a towel allows those helping to support the female from an uninhibiting distance. Nor should her head be held so closely that the male is inhibited from mounting fully, laying his forequarters up by her shoulders.
Not every female holds her tail far enough to one side when flagging. The person supporting her stifle, or holding one side of the towel, may be required to also hold onto her tail. At the same time, this assistant may have to assist the male's aim, tipping her vulva. Those dogs not routinely comfortable with having various portions of their anatomy handled may provide recalcitrant to such intimate maneuvers during this sensitive time.
